How do we get started?

Fill out the form on the contact page.  We will call you to gather information about your project goals and timeline. Once we determine that your project is a fit, we typically schedule an on site consultation.

How much dose a patio cost?

The cost of a patio can range greatly depending on size and features. Also access for equipment and places to stage material play a large part in the final price.  A simple 300 sq. ft. patio typical starts at $8,000.

What if I'm unsure of a budget?

It’s ok if you don’t have a budget. A lot of people aren’t sure how much quality hardscaping costs. However, having a budget can make the design process much smoother.

What can I do to lower the cost of a project?

There are a few ways to lower the cost with out sacrificing the quality of the project.

  • Do the project in stages.

  • Allow use of your driveway for access and material storages.

  • Make patios rectangle, have square corners on walkways, keep walls straight instead of curved. This saves labor and material waste.

  • Pick materials that are readily available.

What happens at the on-site consultation?

During the consultation, you’ll show us around and give us an idea of the areas you’re wanting to address. We’ll  discuss your goals and expectations and we’ll give you some of our ideas and possible solutions. This discussion serves as the starting point for a proposal and a design or drawing if needed.

What happens after the on site consultation?

We get to work on your proposal. If the project is pretty straight forward( like a spring clean up), we provide a proposal within a few days. If the project is more complex we typically take a week or two to develop the design and proposal.

What is Hardscaping?

Hardscaping is defined as any element of a landscape that is not living. That's a pretty broad definition. My personal explanation is, hardscaping is patios, walkways, retaining walls made from interlocking concrete pavers or segmented retaining wall concrete blocks. Typically installed without the use of mortar. Any hardscaping involving natural stone and uses mortar, I personally classify as masonry.

Why should you choose pavers over concrete/stamped concrete?

The first advantage to pavers is the vast amount of pavers on the market today. From different sizes, textures, and colors. Enabling designs that include different pavers to represent and define areas of a patio ( dining area, fire pit, cooking). Second advantage is ease of repair. If a patio or walkway is made of concrete cracks or sinks, the only way to repair it is to remove the concrete, dispose of the concrete ( hopefully to be recycled but not always), and pour new concrete that hardly ever matches the existing concrete left behind. With a paver patio or walkway the pavers in the affected area are picked up, set to the side, the base repaired, and the pavers put back in place. No pavers are thrown away and the pavers will match the existing as they are the originals.

What is the difference between Open grade base and dense grade base?

Refer to the install techniques tab.

What is polymeric sand?

Polymeric sand is sand mixed with additives that harden when activated by water. For more information go to the install techniques tab.

Do you install fabric to prevent weeds?

We do install a fabric under every hardscape project we install but it is not there to stop weeds. The fabric is a geo textile fabric used to separate the stone base from the sub soils to prevent settling.

What manufactures do you use?

We primarily use Techo bloc products, But we occasional use E.P.Henry and Unilock produsts.

How can I clean my hardscapes?

You can use products like wet n forget to remove mold and mild. A mix of dish soap and water along with agitation from a stiff broom works well. We offer yearly cleaning programs.

Can I power wash my patio?

Power washing a patio with polymeric jointing sand will result in the polymeric sand being removed from the joints requiring reinstallation of new polymeric sand. Patios using resin jointing sand can be power washed 30 days after installation.

What Questions should I ask a contractor to vet their knowledge?

Some good questions to ask a hardscape contractor would be.( These are general answers and a more in-depth answer should be easily provided during the conversation)

Q. How does the native soil type impact construction of the hardscape?

A. Rocky sandy soil is best, Clay soil will need amendments.

Q. How deep do you have to dig and how much stone base will be used?

A.  Typical minimum excavation should be 9 inches and 6 inches of stone base.

Q. Do you use any fabric between the soil and stone, What is the main purpose?

A. Yes, Either a woven or non woven geotextile fabric to separate soil and stone and insure against settling. Not used to prevent weeds in the patio or walkway.

Q. What kind of stone base do you use?

A. Dense grade base commonly referred to as modified, ¾ modified, 2A, crusher run, road base. Or open graded base commonly referred to as clean stone, #57 stone, 2B. The answer should never be stone dust or screenings.

Q. How much stone do you install before tamping?

A. This answer will vary based on many facts but the answer should be along the lines of, We install x inches of stone at a time because that is how much our tamper can effectively compact at a time.
